Understanding
Neurodivergence:
An introductory course

One Day- 3 Hours
$185
3 CEUS

This workshop is designed for clinicians seeking to expand their clinical practice by integrating neurodivergent-affirming approaches, specifically within a systems-based or structural family therapy framework. Through this training, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of ADHD and Autism from a neurodivergency-affirming perspective, contrasting it with traditional medical models. The workshop explores key ethical issues, including ableism, the ethical concerns surrounding practices like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), formal diagnosis in adults, and how clinicians can shift their approaches to support neurodivergent affirming practice.

Participants will explore the ethical implications of deficit-based models and the societal harms they perpetuate. They will also learn practical strategies for building an inclusive and affirming therapeutic practice, from creating sensory-friendly environments to adapting interventions that align with neurodivergent clients’ unique needs. Through case examples, group discussions, and practical exercises, clinicians will develop the tools necessary to cultivate a space that respects the autonomy, dignity, and strengths of neurodivergent individuals and neurodivergent families. This workshop will teach clinicians how to use traditional family therapy models in conjunction with the neurodivergent affirming paradigm to improve their overall impact on neurodivergent clients and families seeking a systemic approach to change.

Neurodivergent clients experience the world in ways that are often misunderstood in traditional therapy models. This dynamic and interactive course equips mental health professionals with the knowledge and tools to support neurodivergent individuals through a strengths-based, non-pathologizing framework.

What does it mean to be a neurodivergent-affirming clinician? This course will explore the principles of neurodiversity-affirming care and challenge outdated deficit-based models. Participants will take a deep dive into the lived experiences of neurodivergent individuals, unpacking the crucial differences in sensory processing, executive functioning, communication, and overall health. Through this lens, clinicians will learn how to recognize neurodivergence in clients, navigate the overlap of Autism and ADHD symptoms, and apply effective strategies that honor neurodivergent ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with the world. Participants will also explore the complex landscape of comorbid conditions, including learning differences, nervous system dysregulation, autoimmune concerns, and mental health challenges that often accompany neurodivergence. Additionally, the course will shed light on the common misdiagnoses neurodivergent individuals receive, helping clinicians more accurately assess and support undiagnosed or misdiagnosed clients.

Beyond theory, this course provides actionable techniques rooted in Structural Family Therapy, helping clinicians break through communication barriers, establish supportive environments, and empower neurodivergent clients to thrive. Whether you're looking to refine your approach or build a neurodiversity-affirming practice, this course offers practical insights that will transform the way you understand and work with neurodivergent individuals and couples.
